2014 Edmunds St. John Barsotti Ranch Syrah

When the Barsotti Ranch expanded in 2011 by buying up the abandoned plot of neighbouring Syrah vines, Steve was all ears. He first used grapes from this site for this 2013 wine, in which they were blended with Syrah from the Fenaughty Vineyard. Seeing the quality of the Barsotti-site fruit in 2013, Steve was convinced that it was worthy of a single-vineyard bottling. From 2014, this is Steve's only Syrah cuvée. After some time in old French barrels and natural malolactic fermentation, he leaves the wine on the lees for half a year, followed by a few months in stainless steel.
Winemaker Steve Edmunds and his wife Cornelia St. John first bought a couple of tons of grapes in 1985 and began tinkering with them in a warehouse near them home in west Berkeley. Over the last 30 years, Steve has done what all great students and learners do: he has listened. He listens to feedback from other winemakers, his consumers, and most importantly to what the land and the grapes are telling him from one vintage to the next. In a world saturated with degrees and qualifications in viticulature, Steve stands out for his unofficial self-education.
