"Goutte d'Or" means drop of gold, and indeed every single drop of this unctuous wine should be worth its weight in the precious metal. 1989 was a sensational vintage for botrytis cinerea in the Loire. The Goutte d'Or is a compelling and sophisticated balance between concentrated varietal character, botrytised notes and well-balanced oxidative notes from extended ageing and some time spent in foudre.
François has been called uncompromising in the pursuit of purity in his wines, and it speaks volumes that he hasn't made a Goutte d'Or cuvée since 1990.
