Located within the Russian River Valley AVA which is directly south of Dry Creek Valley, about 40% of El Diablo Vineyard was planted in the 1930s. For the last 40 years, Hector Garcia has been responsible for increasing the plantings and overseeing vineyard management. Ehren has been buying grapes from this site since the 2015 vintage.
Day Zinfandel is the pet project of legendary Californian winemaker, Ehren Jordan. Ehren cut his teeth working at Turley Wine Cellars from the mid-1990s; with vines across California, Turley's focus has always been on Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines. A few years after taking on the role of General Manager at Day, Ehren and his wife Anne-Marie Failla set up their own winery in St. Helena (Failla Wines) with a focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and some Zinfandel. After juggling both these responsibilities for 15 years, Ehren left Turley in 2013 to concentrate full-time on the blossoming business at Failla.
Parallel to this, Ehren had also bought an old apple orchard in St. Helena in 2004. Around about the time that he began mulling over the move away from Turley, Ehren planted these 4 acres with Zinfandel vines. This pet project is a symbolic synthesis of Ehren's thorough background in Zinfandel wines, combined with his new home in the Sonoma Coast.
The same ethos underpins Ehren's work at Day Zinfandel as at Failla; whether working his own 4 acres, or partnering with other growers in the region, Ehren insists on a gentle, organic approach that favours site expression.
