2016 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Region: France, Rhône - South
Farming: Certified Organic
Grape Variety: Grenache, Syrah
Dry, full-bodied red; fresh, spicy | Age it, serve with duck or hare
At just over 80% Grenache (topped up with 5% each of Mourvèdre and Syrah and another 4% each of Counoise and Vaccarèse) this is bursting with fresh strawberries, raspberries and poached plums. Three weeks on the skins, whole cluster fermentation followed by ageing in concrete vessels allows the top-quality fruit to sing, perfectly in tune with garrigue, crushed rocks, black pepper and tea leaves.
Six generations of the Charvin family has tended vines since 1851. Laurent now has 16 hectares of vines in the Côtes du Rhône and 10 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape across the lieux-dits of Cabrières, Maucoil and l'Arnesque. Half of the Châteauneuf yield is sold to negociants and only the very best fruit makes it into Domaine Charvin wines. They have only been making their own Châteauneuf since 1951, when they made the first vintage to celebrate the centenary of the vineyard. The oldest vines in the parcel are over 80-years-old, while the average age is 50 years.
