Cairanne is a village within the Côtes du Rhône. It was first declared a sub-appellation in February 2016, so this vintage is the first to carry the new designation. The name of the wine, «Les Garrigues», is a reference to the aromatic scrub that is so common in the Mediterranean. Its exact composition isn't prescribed, but the redolent mixture of oak, lavender, thyme, sage and rosemary are an appropriate reference point for this namesake wine.
Helen is jovial and full of (often self-mocking) quips in person. It is also no surprise, given how closely he shepherds the berries from vineyard to the cellar and eventually into the bottle, how much his wines resemble him – cheerful, sunny and toothsome Grenache-based wines well-rooted in the land, its people and their traditions.
